Standard 1.OA.3:OPERATIONS AND ALGEBRAIC THINKING 

Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract. For example: If 8 + 3 = 11 is known, then 3 + 8 = 11 is also known. (Commutative property of addition.) To add 2 + 6 + 4, the second two numbers can be added to make a ten, so 2 + 6 + 4 = 2 + 10 =12. (Associative property of addition.) First grade students need not use formal terms for these properties.

This class activity is a math activity that students have to count the number of animals in the zoo by adding the parents and the baby animals in each area of the zoo. Using a google doc for this activity is perfect because it makes making a worksheet for students to work on very easy. All students or teachers need to do is go to the link with the Google Doc and print off the worksheet.
